Ok, some good news on the always online front. According to this article Microsoft will not be forcing the XBox 720 to always be online to do its basic functions. One other piece of news caught my eye in this other article which says the Sims 4 will have single player and offline modes. So, it looks like a big win for gamers on this front.
I think EA’s reasoning is simple, they know they blew it before with Sim City and realize that they can’t risk doing that again. There are times when even large corporations have to listen and it appears they are doing so. Hopefully they will continue to understand that when their customers buy a game from them, the customer wants to play the game as quickly and easily as possible. They don’t want to have to jump through a crap ton of hoops to be able to play. They also don’t want to have to sit around and wait to play due to the fact the company that sold them the game totally blew the rollout.
Microsoft is a bit trickier to figure out. Personally I think they just listened to the backlash they were receiving and saw the major failure of the current state of always online with Sim City. I think they decided the risk of losing the next-gen of console wars before it even it started might have been enough to wake them up. Of course the whole always online thing could have been a red herring and they had no intention of doing it to begin with, they just wanted to see what the reaction was. Who knows?
Either way, this is some good news (as long as it holds true). This news may not change my mind on what console I want to get, I’ve been leaning more and more on PS4, this is something that will at least get me to consider the 720.
So, until next time….
