RIP Tom Clancy

October 2, 2013

It was announced today that Tom Clancy passed away at the age of 66.

I accidentally stumbled upon Tom Clancy’s book Red Storm Rising back in 1988 when I was 16. Up to that point I hadn’t read much of anything in quite some time. If I did read it was only what was assigned, I didn’t go off and read for fun. It was nearing the beginning of summer vacation and I had found this discarded book laying in the hallway at my school. For some odd reason, I read it.

That book not only got me hooked on Tom Clancy, it got me hooked on reading again. That summer break I read more books than I had in many years combined and I still to this day read regularly.

I admit that I didn’t read everything of his. I generally stuck to the Jack Ryan universe of books. I’ve read and reread those books many times and it looks like I’m going to be reading them again here very soon.

I want to thank Tom Clancy for getting me to read again. For creating a fantastic universe that I got lost in many times before and hope to continue getting lost in.

It was the announcement of his passing that I saw that he has a new book due to come out in December. From what I’ve seen of the cover, it says it’s a Jack Ryan Novel. If that remains the case, I’m highly looking forward to it.

No matter what, Rest In Peace Mr. Clancy. Thank you for sharing your talent.
